A small freestanding structure at the end of an existing garden — one room, four openings and a deep overhanging roof.
A single-room pavilion used for work and for gathering. The roof oversails on all four sides so the space can stay open through most of the year, and the walls are little more than the frame between the openings.
Design intent
The idea the project is built on.
At this scale everything is a detail. The roof edge does most of the work.
Spatial planning
How the plan is arranged.
One room, sited at the far corner of the garden so the walk to it is part of the point.
Interior
Inside the building.
A plain lime-washed interior, deliberately unfurnished beyond what the room needs.
Materials
What it is made of.
- Blackened steel
- Frame
- Lime wash
- Walls
- Clay tile
- Roof
Construction
A steel frame with masonry infill, which kept the corners open and the roof edge thin.
Outcome
The most-used room on the property.
